Should you Use UHaul?

I have moved many times in my life, I think I’m going on move 29 or so. I have almost always used UHaul. When I did not, I used my and friends trucks and cars. I’d say until a year ago I was a very happy UHaul customer.

Then a year ago I had to move quickly. I had to have storage, so of course I used UHaul. It was so easy to book my truck, but when it came to storage the website was a bit deceiving. It told me the storage I wanted was not open the day I was going to move, I was not able to go to get access before my move day so I decided I needed to switch storage places to one that is open on a Sunday. I called and told them my situation and they switched places for me.

That was problem number one, I found out when I showed up at the storage place that I had to go to a location 5 miles away to get a card to access the facility, by the way that location was where I got my truck. Also they did not take payments there, and oh by the way, they didn’t have my size unit, but they had one a step up and only $40 more a month! I told them I made arrangements over the phone for a smaller unit. The response was, well customer service sometimes gets things wrong and when you call our store, your being forwarded to a call center.

Yes, I signed for the unit because I was sitting their with a full truck and only had that day to move.

I have been paying for that unit for over a year now. I had some trouble paying the last 2 months so I am moving my stuff out of the unit. When I called to see if I could make payment arrangements and still have access to my unit I was told by customer service that I would be able to make a payment arrangement and still have access. I set up a truck rental and went in to pay at the store, because well, customer service can’t set up payment plans or take partial payments. This should have been my second warning.

When I went into the store I was again told that customer service always screws up and that I would not have access to my unit under a payment plan. Needless to say I was upset, I wanted to move the next day and now I could not. I canceled my truck and walked out of the store. That night I rescheduled a truck though Penskie for the weekend.

Two days later I get online and pay off my unit. As you can see from my invoice I had to pay $187.00. I paid it and was so happy that I was going to be done with all of the mess, then I got the text about my payment.

Instead of taking $187.00 They took $217.00.  I’m livid at this point and am very unhappy with UHaul. I was at work when I found out they over charged me, so I sent a quick message about the problem and have still not heard back.

Now I do want to clarify that when it comes to renting a truck I had no problems. Still this whole experience has left a bad taste in my mouth for the company as a whole. Not because they couldn’t give me what I wanted, but because I was lied to and a year later lied to again. Meaning, they still have not fixed their issues a year later.

Have you used UHaul to move or for storage? What has been your experience?

  1. I’m so sorry you’re going through this! Moving is tough enough without this hassle. I’ve used UHaul for truck rental only and not storage. It sounds like such a scam! Have you tried going through your local consumer protection agency? They might be able to help.
